PAPER MILLS FIRE.
NEW SOUTH WALES DAMAGE.
LOCAL BRIGADE CRITICISED.
(Receivod November 14, 11.35 p.m.) SYDNEY, Nov 14 A coronor to-day opened an inquiry into tho fire in the Cumberland paper mills on October 7, which caused damage to tho extent of £250,000. Robert Bain, mills engineer, stated in evidence that tho lire brigade was very slow in responding to tho alarm. It also failed to take a fire-engine right to tho scene of the outbreak. Had that been done he was of tho opinion that a considerable part of tho machinery could have been saved.
Cross-examined, witness said lie had been threatened with arrest by a constablo when ho gave information about a previous mill fire in 1918. The inquiry was adjourned.
