Sir Gerald dti Maurier, as an actor, has so many admirers in New Zealand that they will lie able almost to picture, what look placo between him and a burglar, and they will appreciate the Jailer's tribute to the former. George Morgan Andeison, a cabinetmaker, aged 36, was at Hampstead sent for trial on a cliargo of attempting Jo break and entor tho rosidenco of the Rev. 0. 11. M. Roxby, vicar of Christ Church, Hampstead, and Cannon Hall, tho residence of Sir Gerald du Maurier.
A statement alleged to have been mado by Anderson was handed to the Bench, in which lie denied all knowledge of No. 10, Cannon Place, but agreed that ho was on tho balcony of Sir Gerald's house. Tho statement added: " It had been raining heavily and tho balcony was slippery, and as I climbed upon it I slipped, and fell against tho window, breaking the glass and cutting myself. " Sir Gerald du Maurier immediately appeared on the scene, unfastened the latch of the French window, and politely asked mo what mado mo do such a foolish thing. I answered: ' Sir, I had no intention of warning you of my presence, as I knew somebody was in tho room. I he.ard the sound which came from the organ.'
" Sir Gerald kindly asked me if I would stef in. I did so. I was surprised by his manliness and courage. I explained I washout, of work and consumptive, and a victim of circumstances, and that I had to resort, lo this kind of thing much against my will.
