WAR MEMORIAL MUSEUM
FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES. GIVING FURTHER CITY AID. " MORALLY BOUND BY PROMISES." Tho financial difficulties of the Auckland Institute and Museum in regard to the new wut* memorial museum building, were again brought under tho notice of the City Council last evening. The institute advised that £2524 had been spent, and £4002 more would be required during the current financial yeai. The estimated deficiency was £2056. Mr. J. A. C. A Mum said the City Council had provided £2OOO as this year a contribution on its estimates, and could hardly do more, lit u desire to aid the institute, however, the question might be referred back to the Finance Committee of the council, to be dealt with at a meeting which the chairman of the institute would be invited to attend. .Mr. JO. J. Plielan: We are morally bound by the promises of a previous council to help the institute, which is now "down and out." It has no money with which to complete the beautiful building on which so many thousands of pounds have been spent. Mr. Phelari suggested the council might pay part of next year's contribution in advance to facilitate completion of tho building and to keep the men engaged upon it in employment. The Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, said the finance under discussion was a matter of maintenance.
Mr. Allum said that both last financial year and this the City Council had paid maintenance contributions, although the new building was not yet in full use. Ilis original suggestion that tho matter be referred back and dealt with at a Finance Committee meeting attended by the chairman of the institute, was agreed to.
