FLAT RATE OF FREIGHT.

NEW ZEALAND TO BRITAIN.

OPPOSITION TO ABOLITION.

[nV TEI.EGR.ArH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT

NELSON, Thursday. At a meeting of the Nolson Harbour Board a letter was received from tho secretary of the Wanganui Harbour Board drawing attention to a recent resolution passed by the Wellington Board to set up a committee of inquiry into tho present. system of a flat rate of freight from New Zealand to the United Kingdom, "with the idea, of course." said tho letter, "of obtaining its abolition. "Tho Wanganui Board is of opinion that this is only another move in tho direction of centralising shipping at the main ports," continued tho letter, "and suggests that a resolution bo passed strenuously opposing any interference with tho system at present in voguo and that a copy be .sent, to tho l'rimo Minister, members of Parliament' and tho shipping companies in England." Tho chairman, Mr. 11. It. Duncan, said the question was first raised in 1925, when it was contended that the delay caused through tho overseas vessels having to call at a number of smaller ports caused the shipping companies to raise their freights. The coastal ports had spent an enormous amount of money in making serviceable harbours and it was not fair that these harbours should be, asked to give up their facilities or make them non-interest bearing.
