The Mount Wellington Road Board met on Tuesday evening, Mr. G. 11. Kay presiding. A letter was received from the UnderSecretary of tho Public Works Department stating that Mr. 1 1 . If. Levion, S.M., Onehunga, had been appointed to conduct an inquiry into tho contiol and maintenance of Portage Road, the boundary lino between the Mount Wellington Road Board district and Otahuhu borough. Tho engincer-in-cliief of tlio Public Works Department advised that a movement was afoot to induco tho Government to discontinue tho regulations authorising local auhorities to charge heavy traflic fees, information was sought concerning tho effect of heavy traffic on tho roads of tho board's district, and tho revenue collected. It was decided to includo in tho reply n statement that tho Mount Wellington Board had already expended £64,000 in concrete road making on main routes without being subsidised, and that since road boards received no share of tho petrol tax any further loss of revenue would plaeo an additional burden on tho ratepayers. Finality was reached in tho matter of tho transfer of part of tho board's Great South Road quarry rcscrvo to tho Mount Richmond Domain Board. Tho commissioner of Crown lands, North Auckland, expressed his agreement, and said ho considered reasonable tho board's conditions upon which it would transfer tho remainder of the area to tho domain board. Tlicso included a stipulation that the balance of tho area should bo transferred at tho end of 15 years, provided tho domain board had effectively carried out a comprehensive scheme of bcautification.
A special meeting of tho road board will bo held at an early date to consider tho nomination of mombers of tho Transport Board.
