THE VEGETABLE GARDEN.
Rock, water, and nio melons may now be sown in wellprepared soil. ' They invariably succeed better raised in this way than when transplanted from pots. The present is a good time to plant kumeras, although ♦ they can safely be planted until well into next month. Ground from which early potatoes havo been dug, should be in good condition for this crop. By making two sowings of runner beans at intervals of about four or five weeks a supply should be maintained throughout tho. summor and well into tho autumn. From this time onward, by successional sowing and planting, there should bo little difficulty in keeping up a supply of seasonable crops. Frequent and deep cultivation is a great factor in obtaining satisfactory results from the garden. Vegetables make heavier demands on the soil than most other kind ol crops. When, continuous results are expected, the supply of plant food must be maintained by judicious manuring. Practically all green vegetables suitable for summer cultivation have a preference for a fairly rich, loamy soli, heavily charged with humus. Humus is the natural food for all plants, being rich in nitrogen, potash, and phosphates in just tho right proportion for plant use. Attend to thinning out of seedling crops. Growth is now rapid, and the plants will soon become too crowded". . Wood ashes worked into the soil where tomatoes are to be planted are claimed to render the plants less susceptible to disease.
