WELFARE OF ANIMALS.
SPECIAL WEEK COMMENCES. INSTRUCTION TO CHILDREN. NEW LYNN HOSPITAL SCHEME. Keeping always before the public the necessity for treating animals kindly, Animal Welfare Week will bo celebrated throughout New Zealand from to-day until next Thursday. The week's observance is a very important part of the work of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. This year the Auckland Society is exerting greater efforts than ever to make the week successful. The scheme was inaugurated five years ago and each year increasing interest has been shown in schools and elsewhere. Instruction iri schools is being concentrated upon to a large- extent this year. A total of 31,000 pamphlets has been sent out to schools in all parts of (he Auckland province. Teachers have been asked to direct the notice of (ho pupils to the event, and an appeal has been made to children to join the junior league of the society. Schools have been requested to hold a special "Pots' Day" to-morrow or on any other day of the special week, when animals will he taken to school and paraded. Teachers are asked to speak to their classes on the duty of kindness to animals, and to obtain the views of the pupils in essays. Tho co-operation of IYA has been sought, so that a small address on the subject may be given during children's hour. Several picture theatres have been supplied with a slide to display on the screen during l.lio week's sessions. A very commendable task is being undertaken by Mrs. P. H. Smith, of East Tamaki, in holding a juvenile gymkhana at the. East Tamaki sports grounds on Saturday afternoon. There will bo 17 events for children, the majority being pony, competitions. The proceeds will be in aid of tho society's funds. Next Sunday it is hoped will be observed in churches as "Animal Sunday." Ministers and Sunday school teachers have been asked to give special addresses. Very shortly (he society expects <o erect an animals' hospital at New Lynn. 1 his will bo conducted by a veterinary surgeon and all ailments of animals will he treated. A dogs' home will be run in conjunction with the hospital and people, when goin h ' away, may leave their pets in (he care of the institution
