RECREATION AREAS.
By his further gift of land at the foot of Mount Roskill, Mr. George Winstone, senior, has generously provided space for a children's playground. In addition, he has undertaken to equip the ground for this purpose and to contribute a fund for the maintenance of the whole park. This thoughtfulness for the welfare of the rising generation and for recreation generally entitles the donor to the thanks of the community now and in succeeding years. The public spirit manifest in these and kindred gifts could be shared throughout the city and suburbs with great advantage. Thanks to it, the Mount Roskill district promises to be well supplied with recreation areas and somo other districts arc being similarly blessed. But there is so great a need for playing fields that the generosity displayed in these gifts can achieve its best result by prompting others to do likewise. It is no reflection on the gifts to say that they are inadequate: they will serve well the desires of the givers, but many mere are required to meet the growing need. This city is still without what is held to be a minimum acreage for organised games, and the position, although relieved a little by the wise action of somo public bodies and private owners of property, threatens to remain acute by reason of the rapid increase in Auckland's population. Pressure for public action should be maintained, for this matter is one of vital concern to the whole community. Meanwhile, the public-spirited gifts made by individual citizens are to be accepted with gratitude, coupled with an earnest hope that their excellent example will inspire many more.
