NOTES BY PHAETON. THE "WELLINGTON HANDICAP. The fact of eight of tho fourteen horses 'paid up for in connection with the Wellington Handicap also figuring in the New Zealand Cup invests the eleven furlongs rnce sot down for decision, nt Treritham to-morrow with a special dash of interest. An eleven furlonga race is, of courao. a very different matter to one extending to the two miles which is attached to the big event at Riccarton; but still a line should at least bo forthcoming on -.the question of condition; and one particular horse "engaged in tomorrow's race in whoso future much inlerest is centred is Beacon Light. Tho field for the Wellington 'Handicap will be drawn from the following:— at. lb. et. lb. Itnpier ... 9 4 Goshawk ... 7 7 Mask ..... 9 4 Blimp 7 4 Beacon Light . 8 9 Shin. Armour 7 0 Mandane . . . . ~8 5 Da.vid Garrick 7 0 Pink Noto ... 'B.O Kilperon .... 7 0 Nukumai ... 712 Taliuker .... 7 0 Black Mint . . 7 11 • A WELL-BRED COLT. The three-year-old Strephon, who won tho Herbert Power Stakes at Caulfiold on Wednesday, can boast of p. stout pedigree, in ' which two strains of Musket blood figure, / and which come to him through very noteworthy channels.' Saltash (sire of Strephon) is by Sunstar from Hamoaze, a daughter of TorpOnt (son of Trenton and grand3on of' , Musket). Soldier's Love (dam of Strephon) is by : Mnrtinn (son of Martagon) from Lichen, who is by Cock-a-hoop from Herb of Grace, a daughter of Spearmint (son of Carbine and grandson of Musket). It will therefore be recognised that there is something to wnrrant the expectation that -, Strephon will carry his winning record much beyond his '.three-year-old career. HAZE AND NEW ZEALAND CUP. Though the Australian-bred gelding Haze has such a poor record, there appears to be ft disposition in, Canterbury to leave it for ... time to prove whether or not he is entitled to be taken .seriously for tho forthcoming: New Zealand■ Cup, in which he figures with 7.1. If Hate could reproduce the same form as ho displayed in' tho back end of his three-year-old career he would be entitled to consideration, but three seasons' racing have gone into the records since Hare ran at years old; and that means he ia now included among tho seven yenr olds. Some moderate performers havo thoir names enrolled'as winner of the New Zealand Cup. Should Ilazo score in ths big Bonthern race another will be entered up in connection - therewith, for his record rends •a follows:

Un- .. \ First. Second. Third, placed. At 2yrs ~ 0 v-0 0 3 At dyia .. . 0 6 0 2 , At 4yrs 0 2 0 5 At syrs .... 12 3 G At 6yrs.—Did not start. A SENS ATI ON All DEFEAT. Melbourne papers now to hand by yesterday's mail show that there was a, sensational surprise' 1 in connection with the October Stakes; run at Flemington on the 6th instant. The race in question, which was,run over a mile at weight-for-age, was considered to so much nt the mercy of the English-bred horse Oothic that lie went out a 10 to 1 on favourite. Gothic was in the lead at the distance; and his •victory seemed assured; but Highland developed a brilliant run; and wearing down Jiia Englisb-bred rival he beat him home by a neck amid a scene of great excitement. Highland is an aged gelding by Highficld. ; MISCELLANEOUS NOTES. The Opotiki Jockey Club will hold its annual race meeting next year on January ,1G; , Textile, who won the CooTtgy Handicap At the Victorian Amateur Turf Cluh'e meoting on Wednesday, is engaged in the Caulfield. Cup with 9.0. Last year Textile won that race under 8.3. Money Order is stated to have been well •erred In the matter of condition when he laced »t the Dunedin meeting last week; and the opinion is expressed that the son of Paper Money is unlikely to take high honours at six years old,. Horoscope, who figures among the acceptances for the, Caulfield Cup, is a New Zea-land-bred trelding by Absurd—Lady Ball. Last season he won a couple of good races over a milo and a-quarter, under the respective Imposts,, of 8.9 and 8.11. At Caulfield last month he won the Heatherlio Handicap Under 8.6. A mile and a-half journey may not, however, be to the likintf of Horoscope;

but he is not ovcr-weijrhted with 8.0.

Rapier having been transported to Wellington with a view to fulfilling his engagements' at Trentham, he will probably bo accorded an early opportunity of reinstating himself. The son of Greyspear has only managed to giin a placo on ono occasion Bince he defeated King Lu and Satrap in the Clifford Plato at Ellorslie on January 3 last, ao that jt would bo pleasing to find liim on th» upgrade. Eapier is now included tvith the aged division.
