PERMIT OVERSTAYED.
CHINESE FINED £2O. YEAR TOO LONG IN COUNTRY. A fine of £2O was imposed in (he. Police Court yesterday on a Chinese, Wong Kee, aged 33 (Mr. McLiver), charged with overstaying a temporary permit. Mr. ,J Mcintosh, of tho Customs Department, said a temporary permit until September 27, 1926, had been granted. Following that, Kee had an extension until September 27, 1927. No further extension had l>cen granted.
Mr. McLiver said accused had been very ill and had omitted to obtain the necessary permit. He had come forward and given himself up. The Magistrate, Mr. Hunt: They all do that.
In fining accused £2O (ho magistrate said he had power to inflict a heavier penalty. An order was made for deportation from New Zealand.
