BOTANIC GARDENS.

USE OF AUCKLAND DOMAIN.

GROWING INDIGENOUS PLANTS

The development of the Domain as a botanic garden was suggested to tho Auckland City Council last evening by a sub-committec set up by the Parks Committee some months ago.

The New Zealand Institute of Horticulture lias under way a project for tho furtherance of a Dominion botanic garden scheme. The main foundation of that scheme is to invite the municipalities of the. four main centres to co-operate bv allocating some area under their control to the more specific culture of botanical specimens, such garden to remain under the absolute control of the municipality concerned. The scheme, it is hoped, will be assisted by the Government in the way of supplementing the "efforts of local bodies with funds and scientific advisory instruction.

In suggesting (ho Domain should bo used for Auckland's part of the scheme, tho sub-committeo regarded that as the most economical proposition. It was made clear that it was not intended to interfere with the areas devoted to sport. Certain parts of the Domain, however, needed attention, and some work would shortly have to be done to furnish the surroundings of the War Memorial Museum. If that and all future work were done with a botanic objective, the area would in the course of years become most representative, instructive and valuable botanically, without in any way losing its charm as a public pleasure garden and recreation area..

It should be possible to grow in Auckland about one-third of the indigenous plants (about 600 species), and accommodation in suitable surroundings could be found in the Domain. It was believed the development of the Domain as a botanic garden could be well done out of the normal maintenance, aided by tho donation and exchango of plants and financial assistance from the Government. It was also suggested an honorary or retaining fee bolanist should bo attached to tho Parks Committee, to guide the more scientific side of the work.

The recommendations were adopted
