SUNDAY ENTERTAINMENT.

VETO BY CITY COUNCIL. PROTEST AGAINST THE POLICY. Very strong exception to the City Council's decision against the opening of tlio Majestic Theatre on Sunday evenings was taken in a letter addressed to the City Council last evening by Mr. W. T. Nutling on behalf of the committee of, the Sunday League. He claimed the matter had not been fairly considered and pointed out that the Labour Party. Higher Thought societies and others were permitted to hold meetings on Sunday evenings in the Town Hall and Queen Street theatres.

The league's aims stood for the uplift of thought and the spread of knowledge in the realms of art, science, religion and ethics. "There is a great need on Sunday evenings foi a gathering of this kind." declared Mr. Nutting. "The streets are crowded wilh people who are debarred from a meeting from which only good can result, and they are not attraded by the band and organ recitals provided by the council." "Why should not these people have the same right as anyone else?" asked Mr. E. E. Copsey. The Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, said the request had l«eeri frequently before the committee, but. it was not considered lo be "in the best interests" to grant the application. Mr. Copsey: But why? Tlie Mayor: Well, move it be granted Mr. Copsey did so. "The By-laws Committee was quite sure that these functions must be run to make a profit for someone," said Mr. A. J. Entrican. He stated very questionable entertainments had beon given in the past, inducing the committee to recommend the council to be particularly careful in giving permits, "This man wants to mix up picture shows and that sort of thing," said the Mayor. The application was declined.
