UNEMPLOYMENT INQUIRY.
The Prime Minister has announced the personnel of a special committee, appointed by the Government, to make a thorough investigation of the problem of unemployment. It will be remembered that the National Industrial Conference, making acknowledgment of "the complexity of the problem"—an admission that critics of tho Government have not always been careful to mention—suggested tho appointment of such a committee as an essential preliminary to decisive action. With this recommendation the Government expressed itself as in perfect accord. The functions of the committee, as recommended by the conference, are designed to cover an investigation of the most comprehensive sort, and should furnish a basis for remedial action in meeting both temporary and periodic unemployment. As announced, the personnel of the committee shows it to be larger and stronger than even the workers' representatives at the conference suggested: in addition to the representatives of employers and employees respectively, it will have the assistance of the Government Statis tician and the Under-Secretary for Immigration. So constituted, it ought to accomplish very useful work, and complete confidence may be reposed in it as inclusive of expert advisers as well as representatives of both interests in industry. It should give a good account of itself as an instance of co-operative effort to solve a vexing problem affecting the whole community.
