ENGINES FOR RAILWAYS.
EXPENDITURE OVERSEAS
ORDERS NEEDED AT THAMES
[BY TELEGRAPn.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.J THAMES, Wednesday.
Tho provision on tho Railways Department estimates of expenditure of £45.000 for the purchase of locomotives made overseas, as against £9OOO for engines made in New Zealand, is causing concern in Thames, in view of tho fact that tho prosperity of Thames is largely dopendont on the continuous employment of Messrs. A. and G Price's largo staff of experienced ironworkers, who aro specialists in tho construction of railway locomotives. This specialisation has been gained in tho building of 123 locomotives of all types for the New Zealand Government, which has many times expressed high praise o! tho excellence of the Thames workman ship in this respect. In recent years tho firm's premises have been extended and now machinery installed. Although the Government has kept its promiso to provide some railway repair work orders for locomotive construction are needed to prevent tho impending dismissal of a largo number of employees.
