NOTES FROM THAMES.

MEW WATER SUPPLY SCHEME.

COUNTY COUNCIL PROPOSAL

[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN' CORRESPONDENT.] THAMES, 'Wednesday.

The engineer to the Thames County Council, Mr. J. Higgens, has prepared a water supply scheme to serve an area of 6000 acres of farmed land covering the whole of the country on the west, and about a mile to the east of the ThainesPaeroa main highway, between the Puriri and Hikutaia streams. He estimates that a daily eight-hour supply of 71,580 gallons can be provided from tho Omahu Stream at a cost of approximately Is 6d per acre. Tho council hopes to inaugurate tho service in tho latter part of next year. It is not thought that tho Marine Department will impose any further restrictions in connection with the operations of Danish seine net fishing boats in the Hauraki Gulf. In the course of his annual report to Parliament, Mr. A. E. Hefford, chief inspector of fisheries, stated that Danish 'seino net fishing under the present regulations as to the mesh of tho net did not result in undtio destruction of undersized fish, and lie was convinced that its effect upon fish food organisms was negligible. Tho falling-off in business, due to competition by motors and tho railways, is given by the Northern Steamship Company as tho reason for the removal of the steamer Rangitoto from the Auckland-Thames service. Tho Rangitoto will bo replaced by a smaller vessel under Captain Warm, (formerly in command of tho Rangitoto. Tho sons of the lato Mr. P. E. McCullongh and Mr. A. Court have donated two gold badges to the Thames Howling Club for pairs competition to commemorate the memory of their fathers, who were among the first members of the club. An elaborate sports outing is being arranged for Monday no.xt by tho Thames Volunteer Fire Brigade to raise funds for tho purchase of a new motor-reel.
