A FACT CHRISTIANS MUST FACE. Before the general consciousness in a Christian nation can ho persuaded to regard tlio moderate use of alcoholic liquor as • wrong tho Christian ethic nmst be abandoned. Tho Christian philosophy does not regard alcohol or any material thing ns evil. Evil lies, not in matter, but in a perverse will, and in a misuse of material things which are, in themselves, good, or at least morally indifferent. Hence, the Great Master taught that " Not that which gocth into a man's mouth dcfiletli a man, but that which cometh out of a man's mouth, that defiled) him." And so He did not hesitate to turn water into fermented wine, and to drink fermented wine Himsolf. So long as the teaching and example of Jesus Christ and the apostles are known and havo weight, so long it will bo impossible to make the general consciousness believe that the moderate use of alcohol is wrong. It is fatal to make a crime iri law of that which is not a sin in tho Christian ethic, or to legislate contrary to i general consciousness.
