STANLEY WEYMAN'S FORTUNE. Tho lato Stanley J. Weyman, unlike most successful novelists, was nurtured in comfortable surroundings, but most people were surprised to learn that he left nearly £IOO,OOO, says John o' London's Weekly. Somo part of this sum was, no doubt, inherited, but it may be imagined ho earned the bulk of it by his own pen. After tho early success of "Tho House of tho Wolf," in 1890, he wrote steadily for twenty years, andhis sales in the 'nineties were very big for thoso days. Nevertheless, how many pcopJe would havo expected him to loaVo £20,000 moro than Dickens, nearly £40,000 moro than Rider Haggard, four times moro than Marie Corolli, and five times more than Con rid ? The largest fortune left by any novelist was Victor Hugo's £300,000. In those days of world-wide publication and multiple rights and film royalties, it may bo wondered how long <ho record will stand. One living English author is said to bo worth as much already, and three others are probably not far bohind*
