DAMAGE BY WHIRLWIND.
HOKITIKA'S experience. TRAINING SHED DEMOLISHED. A whirlwind of cyclonic force passed over the northern portion of Hokitika shortly after 8.30 on Wednesday morning, and a good deal of general damage was done to fences, trees and buildings. The training shed of the Excelsior Football Club was levelled to the ground. A brick chimney in the residence of Mr. Hugh Park crashed through the roof, and, breaking the rafters, fell through the ceiling. Workmen had been engaged on the racecourse for the past week lifting the No. 2 grandstand to move it to tho site of the stand which was destroyed by fire last month. The wind lifted tho large two-storey building off the jacks and packing, and it jumped 3ft. before settling, the workmen scattering for safety. The building remained intact, although some large pieces of timber were broken by the crash. Other damage on tho course includes demolished fences about the lawn and some damage to the judge's box.
