MINING NEWS.

OPERATIONS AT WAIHi*. RESULTS OF EXPLORATORY WORK [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] WAIHI. Friday. Exploratory work in the' Waihi mine j and also in the Grand Junction area by! the Waihi Gold mining Company in the past few months has added a considerable tonnage of quartz to, the ore reserves. On the Regina section of the Martha reef, at No. 9 level, a substantial block of milling ore, which the management, pending recent operations, had not been justified in including in the official reserves, has been opened up. Here a crosscut projected diagonally in a north-westerly direction from No. 4 shaft has passed through a largo body of quartz intermixed with country rock, the first 16ft. of which assayed 30s 6d per ton, the next 18ft 58s 9d and tho last 17ft. (at right angles) 25s 9d. It therefore seems probable that a substantial quantity of milling ore will be available for sloping at this point, and steps are being taken to lest the Regina in tho sub-levels, above where already a crosscut, lias disclosed the existence of profitable quartz. At No. 14 level, on the Edward lode, driving north from the Duolop crosscut, payable assays have been met with, the first 13ft. being worth 28s 9d per ton, the next 10ft. 35s 3d and the following 14ft. 15s 6d. . . Good grade ore is also being won from the Dominion reef in-tho Grand Junction area, the lode being evidently a section of the Empire reef * north of the main body. The run of ore so far proved_ extends 150i't. eastward from the Waihi mine, and as there are possibilities of the upward extension of the reef, a crosscut is being put out from the ninth level of the Waihi mine. REPORTS OF MANAGERS. Maori]and.—For some weeks past two men have been employed on a reef at No. 3 level, and last week they broke down a ton of ore, which, together with 81b. of picked atone, was sent to the Thames School of Mines for a test crushing. This produced 21oz lOdwts. of bullion, valued at £6l 7sa very satisfactory result, which works out at over £4O a ton for the general ore.
