Miss Barbara Gould, of Fcndaßon, Christchurch, is visiting Auckland for tae golf championship meeting. Miss Olive Mercer, of Dunedin, who "returned from the Pan-Pacific Conference at Honolulu a fortnight ago, leaves this morning for Rotorua. The monarch of Afghanistan, whoso red carpet progress through Great Britain was an event of a few months back, has returned to his own land with glowing accounts of the work of the women in England, says an exchange. He pees nothing inconsistent between public duties and home life, and ho has been advising the women of his own land to follow in Western ways. He was particularly impressed by the fact that in Liverpool it was a woman.- who, as Mayor, welcomed him to the city. The monthly meeting of the Henderson branch of the Women s Chiistian Temperance Union was held yesterday afternoon in the Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Pratt presiding. It'was decided to allow Standard \\. as well as Standard A L, of the school children to compete m the Essay on Temperance," prizes for which are being offered. The report of the ■delegates to the recent convention and other business matters were deferred till the next meeting. A short address was given by Mrs. Lee Cowie, in which she strongly emphasised the necessity for educating men and women so as to influence public •opinion on the temperance question, and to bring home to parents the pernicious effects of alcohol, more especially upon the children. At the conclusion a heartv vote of thanks was accorded her, and afternoon tea concluded the meeting.
