HIGHER PRICES FOR BEEF.

RETAIL RATES TO ADVANCE. EFFECTIVE FROM TO-MORROW. A sharp rise in, the retail prices of beef is announced by the Auckland Master Butchers' Association to take, effect- tomorrow. Practically all cuts are affected, the advance varying from Id to 3d per lb. Retail prices of mutton, veal and pork remain unchanged. The rise in retail prices follows upon the remarkably high values for beef ruling at Westfield fat stock sale on Wednesday. Compared with the previous week, rates advanced about 20 per cent. Extra prime ox beef, for instance, brought 48s per 1001b., a rise of Bs, and other grades of beef showed a similar appreciation. As from to-morrow, housewives will have to pay Is 2d for rump steak, the current price being Is. „ Sirloin goes up from 9d to lOd, beef steak from. 6d to Bd, prime ribs from 6d to 7d, wing ribs from 8d to 9d, chuck rib from 4d to sd, gravy and minced beef from 5d to 6d, tripe from 6d to 7d. Under-cut steak, a luxury line, marks the sharpest advance, the new price being Is 4d, or 3d per lb. higher. It is some consolation to the. harassed housewife to discover that sausages, sausage meat, suet, ox tails, kidneys and tongues will sell at the old prices. Compared with prices a year ago, the rise is even more pronounced. This is, however, consistent with wholesale prices, which are about 15s per 1001b. higher to-day than they were 12 months ago.
