CIVIC SQUARE LEASES.
ACCESS TO THE DOCUMENTS. PROTEST BY RATEPAYERS. A protest, accompanied by a request for information relating to the construction of the Huia dam, was forwarded by the Avondale Ratepayers' Association to last ovening's meeting of the City Council. The protest was against the council's action "in refusing councillors permisison to inspect legal documents relating to the Civic Square." The information sought was the city engineer's estimate for tha completion of the Huia dam, the actual cost to May 31 last, and details of the loan or loans carried to finance the work.
The Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, moved that the letter be received and the information furnished.
Mr. A. J. Stallworthy said the statement that the council had refused access in legal documents relative to tho Civic Square was untrue and it should bo repudiated in the letter of reply.
Mr. W. 11. Murray said lie had been refused permission to inspect the files relative to the Civic Square leases until the council should give its sanction id meeting. Mr. A. J. Entrican said Mr. Murray got all the information which could, under the Act, be given to him. There was one> "most interesting file" which Mr. Murray would like to inspect, but such information was not open to other councillors. The motion was carried.
