KEEN GAME AT PAEROA

Rugby football competitions were continued m the country centres on Saturday. 4 i 0 following results were received from the Herald correspondents:— Hamilton.—ln the Clarke Clip competition under the auspices of the Hamilton Rugby Uin ion, City defeated Frankton by 17 points to 0, and Marists defeated Technical Old IJoys by 24 points to G. In a junior curtainraiser, to the Peace Cup match, Old Boys A defeated Oid Boys Colts by 11 points to ]J. South Auckland.—ln the South Auckland Unions senior competition, Pukekohe, IS. defeated Manukau, 3, at Papakura, and \\aruku, 10, defeated Waikare, G, at Waiuku. Between Pukekohe and Manukau a very even contest was expected, but Pukekohe had easily the best of the came, showing combination, dash and finish which their opponents found difficult to copo with. The first quarter brought no scoro. Iti the second quarter S. Crotty, at wing-three-quarter for Pukekohe. kicked infield, sending the ball well into Manukau territory, and Cooke, following fast, secured well on the flank of the Manukau fullback and had a oear run in by tho posts. S. Crotty converted the try. A few minutes later Pukekohe broke away along the white, Massey scoring near the corner. This made the score at half-time: Pukekohe, S; Manukau, 0. Pukekohe backs were handling with snappiness and speed, and the third Quarter saw them work a splendid passing rush right through a strong defence by Manukau, tho ball travelling out to the wmg-threequarter and in again, in all, seven passes. J. AVood scored_ under the bar. S. Crotty added the minor points: Pukekohe, 13; Manukau, 0. A little later Manukau were awarded a. free kick and P. Heard sc.ijjed: Pukekohe, 13: Manukau, 3. In the Waiuku-Waiknre match Harvey opened the score for Waiuku in the first half with a goal from a mark. In the second half Cox evened matters temporarily with a penalty goal for Waikare. Next Pullar drop-kicked a goal from the field for Waiuku. Waikare responded with a try by Finlayson. Waiuku, 7: Waikare, ti ; The final score was a try by Ballantine for Waiuku, the game ending: Waiuku. 10: Waikare: G. Mr. W. J. Short refereed. In the South Auckland Union's iuuior competition. Manukau; 11, defeated Franklin. ti, at Papakura. A schools' representative match, Franklin v. Pukekohe. for the Morrison Shield, was played at Pukekohe. It resulted: Pukekohe, 12: Franklin. G. Paeroa.—Considerable interest was taken in tho final of the Paeroa "Union's cup competition, when West and Hikutaia met for the third fjme. On each of the previous occasions tho teams played a drawn game. West won by G points to 3. There was a good attendance and the ground was in excellent order. The first quarter was evenly contested, but neither side could score. West was compelled to force on three occasions. At the end of tho first half Swan gathered up the ball and. opening up. passed to McWatters, who scored. The third spell was evenly contested, with West having the better of the play. t In the last spell West was penalised right under the posts. Mcßao scored. West, 3: Hikutaia, 3. West continued to attack. Knight and McWatters. following up a high kick, smothered the opposing backs, and Knisrht secured and scored tho winning try as the bell rang. The game was very evenly contested Throughout and both sets of backs gave a good display of open play. Mr. D. Walsh, of Waihi, refereed. Wnimauku.—A third grade match on the Waimauku Snorts Ground resulted:—Parakai. 3, v. Waimauku. 5.. Thames.—Thames juniors defeated Hnaraki Juniors by 16 to 0. Thames High School defeated Hamilton High School by 02 noints to 0.

"Whangarei.—The Whangarei representatives successfully withstood Otamatea's challenge for the Harding Shield. Although the final score was G points (two unconverted tries) to 0. there was not that much difference between the teams. As an exposition of Rugby, particularly in the first, half, the game was of a standard too seldom witnessed. The forward und back divisions were evenly matched and each side in turn took the initiatve. No score had been made 011 the first- change-over. Tn the second quarter Waterman and Britland scored for the winners. In the second half the pace slackened a little and -the gam« became tighter., but in the last .minute Otamatea supplied a couple of thrills with dashes down the sideline. Other games resulted:—Juniors: Whangarei. 21, v. Otamatea. G. Third grade: Horaliora, 8, v. High School, 0. The winners have an unbeaten record so far this season. Te Awamutu. —The Waipa Union matches were all played at Te Awamutu. Sis junior teams played in the first round of the Doyle Cun competition, the games resulting:—United. 8. v. •Korakonui. 0: Mangahoc, 29, v. Korakonui B, 3: Te Awamutu, 37, v. Rovers, 0. In the senior competition Rovers won by default from Karamu ond United defeated Te Awamutu by h> points to 3. Neither tfam was at full strength, nine juniors filling vacancies. Rotorua.— A contest for the Shalfoon Shield was played between Rotorua. and Opotiki. Rotorua. the holders, dominated the game from the start.. The backs opened the game and kept it. open. They scored six Iries and converted .one. Trie gam©ended: Rotorua. 20: Opotiki. 3. Ihe Opotiki's score was obtained from a penalty kick. Te Kuiti.—A match between (he le Kuit.i High School and the Otorohanga High School (holders) for the Teddy Shield resulted in a win for Te Kuiti by 20 points to 3. . , Tauranga— Nearly 000 . _ excursionists travelled by train from Waihi to Tauranga to witness the various sporting contests between Tauranga and Waihi teams. Chief interest centred in the Rugby . game between the senior renreser tatives. Ihe match was keenly fought. There was no score at. half-time. Tn the second half R. ,T Pheian and W. Turner scored for lauranga. neither try being converted. Tauranga won by G points to 0. Ihe ninteh between tho junior teams was won by Tauranga by 22 points to 11. The' game between the High School A teams was won by Waihi. bv 11 points to 10. The match between tho High School B teams was won bv Tauranga by 3 to 0. Opotiki. -The Onotiki . senior representatives played Te Puke in ideal, football weather. Te Puke won by 22 noints to 3. Te Puke scored sis points before the change over. Tn the second quarter Opotiki played rather better and niado To Puke force 011 two or three occasions. At halftime the score was: Te Puke, 6: Opotiki. n. McKay. Opotiki. had his head badly hurt, but resumed play. Later be sprained an ankle and had to be carried .off. 11l the third spell Te Puke scored six. more points. Opotiki were first, to score, in ' thn last quarter, Marjoribanks getting a good try. From then 011 Te Puke bad all the best of the game, scoring two more tries and both being converted. 11. Shnlfoon took the place of McKay when the latter was injured, but Shalfoon received a serious injurv to his leg and had to lie taken to hospital. McKenzie, for Q> Puke, was the best back on tho field. Lysaght was most prominent for Opotiki.
