AT GOVERNMENT HOUSE.
Thcro was a very largo gathering at Government House, Wellington, oil Wednesday night when Their Excellencies the Governor-General and Lady Alice Fergusson gave a brilliant ball, at which were present many naval oflicers from the Japanese squadron and (he Argentine training ship. It was, in addition, the " debutantes' ball," when nineteen girls made their first appearance at Government House. The drawing rooms were artistically arranged with early wattle, purple irises and winter foliage. Violets were to be seen in quantities, and the conservatory was arranged for sitting out, with pink shaded lights and comfortable chairs. Supper was set in tho largo dining room, the entrance hall, and corridor, the Vice-Regal table being very effective with gold central epergne and candelabra. It was altogether a charming scene, added to by the bright faces and dainty frocks of tho debutantes, the many naval uniforms, and a host of pretty frocks worn by other guests. Vice-Admiral Kobayaslii, Prince Takamatsu, and the officers of the Japanese ships, Captain Costa Palma and officers of the Argentine training ship, were received by Their Excellencies before entering the ballroom. A handsome gown of rose, mauve, and gold brocade, with diamond ornaments, and a delicate scarf of deep cream lace were worn by Hep Excellency Lady Alice Fergusson.
