TEACHING POSITIONS.
EFFECT OF RISE IN GRADE. G FUTURE POLICY OF BOARD. "EACH CASE ON ITS MERITS." "We cannot sit on the see-saw over this —we must do one thing or tho othor," said a member of tho Auckland Educa tion Board yesterday when tho futurepolicy of dealing with teaching positions where schools rise in grade, thus affecting tho salaries, was discussed. It was decided to revert to the former practice of considering each case on its merits, rather than to transfer tho teacher con corned and advertise tho position. A committoe set up at last meeting favoured this action. In a report submittod it was stated no rigid schemo of a genoral nature would meet tho difficulties that arose. Various complexities necessitated consideration of each case on its merits. Mr. 11. S. W. King said ho considered school committees should be consulted in placing teachers. Very good help could be obtained from those whom tho board represented. The chairman, Mr. A. Burns, said the complications which aroso in the matter were very great. If only a few teachers were concerued tho board might be able to advertise the positions, However, there were a large number of teachers to be transferred this year under the resolution of November last. Only a few • could possibly bo transferred and there would naturally bo envy among the teachers. Mr. F. A. Suell said the board had been actuated by a desire to uphold tho grading system and to meet the wishes of the Educational Institute. Laws were generally hard on someone and some Leachers would necessarily suffer. Whilo agreeing with Mi'. King that the committees might be able to help the board, Mr. T. U. Wells said the committees could necessarily take ouly a small view, whereas the board could see the broad aspect. Mr. G. Brown lee said the board should stand to the grading-list and the highestgraded teacher should obtain the posi tion. Mr. J. Boddie moved the adoption of the committee's report, the motion being carried by 7 votes to 5.
