CANTERBURY NOTES. RICCARTON TRACK WORK. GOLD MINT IN FORM. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. Chief interest in the track work at Riccar--1;on thin morning waj provided by the horses who aire bookod to race at Trentham next week, but proceedings were not particularly exciting. Roncrea drew right away from Island Fastness at the end of a five furlong spin run in 1.4, a useful effort. F. D. Jonea. will bave only Roßcrea racing at Trentham,. arid he will leave for the North with the two-year-old on Saturday. IZaragozs., who was to have accompanied him, hau gone lurne, and she has been sent home to be retired to the stud. Gold Mint, with the assistance of Lancer, covered & mile and a-quarter in 2.12 1-5. Gold Mint in in s:reat fettle for Trentham engagements. Chiokwheat had a slight advantage over Groyfincli at the end of six furlongs, which occupied 1.1(1 4-!5. It was a very smart performance. Chickwheat will be schooled again later Jin the week. Aberfeldy was restricted to an easy sprint over three fu:rlorifr:i. He will have another turn over hurdles on Saturday.

J. McCorobe will leave for Trentham with Amorist and Despot on Monday. Amorist will noli run on the first day, and Despot, though engaged in a seven-furlong event on the first, day. may also be reserved for —shorter events later in the meeting. Kaikahu v.-ill go North on Monday for engagements at the Wellington meeting. He has been kept to easy tasks since he has been at Riccnrton.

The services of A. E. Ellis will be in considerable request at Trentham next week He will be riding on the flat and over obstacles. and his first, day's engagements include Tuki in the Wellington Steeplechase, in addition to Ro3crea, Catkin and Carinthia, while he will be on Royal Game or Black Mint in the Whyte Memorial Handicap.

The Southland horseman, A. 8. Ellis, has been at Rice art on for a few days, and he has done a lot of tiding on the tracks. He will go North for the Trentham meeting. 11l the meantime. Captain Sarto is his only riding engagement.

Gay Bird has bisen taken in hand again by R. Longley after enjoying a spell for several months.

NOTES FROM ELLERSLIE. GiOSISIP OF THE TRACKS. BY ARCHER. Tho Auckland Racing Club's committee decided some time ago to effect considerable improvement to the race track c.t Ellerslie and the work has been advanced in sections, with tho result that there is not a great deal to be clone before the new portion will be absorbed in the truck. Another stage of the work has recently been undertaken and at present workmen; are bußily engaged In filling in the depression between the five and sis furlong routs. Ellerslie will be transformed when ihe scheme is completed and that will not be a matter of many months now.

The two-year-old filly Avoncourt is wintering nicely and carrying a very healthy appearance. Avencourt proved useful in javenilei handicaps this season and the chances are she will again be a payable proposition in the new season. Another member of P. Gilchrist's team who has benefited by the eusy time he has had lately is Winuome Boy, who has built up and is in nice order to go ahead with a preparation for spring racini;.

The Solferiiio gelding Muscari, who has been temporarily under the charge of W. Garrett at Ellersli'S, will in future be trained nt Whnngarci. M'uscati has not shown much form, but he ivni.jf be equal to picking vp a stake or two in the moderate company le will meet at the meetings in the Northland counties.

Killutd looks none tho worse for his recent racing arid he is being kept going with a view to lacing at Gisborne at tho end of the month. The Kilboy gelding has been a. loin; tima trying to win his way out of hack company and can only be regarded as a moderate. Nevertheless he has raced prominently in his last two starts and a repetition of his latest form should make him dangerous in tho class he will meet r,t Gisborne.

Fit and well, Revel is a very useful hurdler, but ho went amisn after running a couple of good races at Ellerslie in tie autumn and has not been seen out since. Apparently he is all right again, ns he is booked to race at Trentham next Week. Revel may possibly be in need of & .ace, but ho will only require to strip well to give a good account of himself in the hurdle events.

The Auckland horses Beau Cavalier and Kawini (finished first and second respectively in the Wellington Steeplechase last vear and they are it,gain expected to run prominently this year. The pnir will meat on considerably df:ff event terms on this occasion and at the altered weights Kawini thay 1 ave a pood chance of turning the tables. Last year Bean Cavalier had 10.7 and Kawini 10.12. Tlhifi yi:ar Beau Cavalier has 11.13 and! Ks,Willi 10.V), a difference of 231b. in favour of Kawini.

Amohg tho hiWsefl on the minimum in the Whyle Mefnorial Handicap to be decided sit Trentham. ne:ct week is Fairy Herald, who scored easily in. the Winter Oatß Handicap on the same course last year. The cTarenoeux gekling revels in heavy going, and, an he recently showed a return to form by winning at Dunedin, he may bo worth following in liis coming engagements. Fairy Herald W»s unlucky in getting away badly in 'khe Why'io Manorial Handicap laßt year, otherwise hi£i would have been very handy ftt the fintaliw
