HAMILTON, Thursday, -i

The theft of an overcoat, the property of Mr. J. K. Fow, auctioneer, and Mayor of Hamilton, and several articles of military clothing, was admitted by a married woman, Margaret Martin Shaw, aged 50, before Messrs. W. F. Mason and J. w. Walsh, J.P.'s, in the Hamilton Magistrate's Court'to-day.

Sergeant Stark said accused attended a sale'at a house at Wliitiora yesterday. Mr. Fow was the auctioneer. After the sale the articles were missed and accused, who had been previously suspected, was followed. The.goods were found in her possession. : : :

Sergeant Stark described the theft as;, being tantamount to shoplifting, and as the offence was becoming common at sales he asked that an example be made oi: accused. She had a husband, and was working, and six adult children. Accused was fined £2 on the charge oi: stealing tjio coat, and was convicted' on the second count.

An application for the suppression of accused's narno was refused. ;
