DUTY IN THE NAVY.
SAILORS' QUICK TRANSFER. ARRIVAL BY THE ARAWA. DUNEDIN JOINED AT ONCE. Two members of tho crew of H.M.S. Dunedin, which set. out on her long Pacific cruise yesterday, have been deprived of the amenable spell of base duty which usually falls to the lot of naval ratings who come out from England to New Zealand. The ratings, Ordnance Artificer E. Bird and Ship's Writer 11. Harper, wore passengers by the Arawa, which arrived from England yestorday afternoon, and were greeted with the news that they were to join the Dunedin immediately.
As soon as tho Arawa dropped anchor, a pinnance went alongside and an officer boarded tho vessel. Unfortunately, tho luggage of tho new arrivals was in the hold and could not bo removed until the vessel berthed. Meanwhile the Dunedin, which was timed (o sail at three o'clock, had pulled out into the stream, and then followed a period of patient waiting. When the Arawa berthed shortly before fivo o'clock sho was boarded by further members of the crew of tho Dunedin in search of English mail and tho baggage of their new shipmates. With the assistance of members of the Arawa's crew and other officials their business was soon completed. After hasty goodbyes to fellow-passengers tho two new arrivals were hurried to a waiting pinnance, which carried them at full speed to the warship, which finally sailed at 5.30.
Two other ratings. Chief Petty Officer G. Miller and Able Seaman Marley, also arrived by the Arawa to join the Veronica.
