COCHET DEFEATS lIOPMAN.

PROGRESS OF COMPETITIONS. Australian Press Association—United Service LONDON, June 26. The Wimbledon tennis championships were continued to-day. In the second round of the men's singles Cochet (France) defeated Hopman (Australia), 6—l, 6-4. B—6. The impression was created that no Australian had ever given a more creditable performance at Wimbledon than Hopman. Time and again, when Cochet was within a point of game, Hopman returned aces. ITe has everything that makes a world winner except experience. His audacity thrilled the Wimbledon crowd. Nobody else of Hopman's physique has ever displayed such a service. Other results were; Bmgnon (France) defeated Holthouse (South Africa), 5—2, 6—4, 6—2; do Morpurgo (Italy) defeated Williams, 6—2, 6—4, Tilden defeated Fisher, 6—l, 6—3, 6 —l; Ohta (Japan) defeated Zerlendi (Greece), 6—l, B—6, 6—3: Patterson (Australia) defeated Ivleinschroth (Germany), 6—o, 6 —2, 61; O'Callaghan (Ireland) defeated Robson (Argentine), 7—5, 6—3, I—6, 6 4; Gregory defeated Morea, 6—3, 36,8 6, 4__6 ; 6—l; Boyd (Argentine) defeated Pitt, b—6, 6—3, 7—5; Borotra (France) defeated Hughes, I—6, 6—4, 6—3, 86; Lacoste (France) defeated Hawkes (Australia), 6—3, 4—6, 6—2, 6—4; Spence defeated Timmer (Holland), 6—l, 4—6, 6—4, B—lo, 6—3.
