WOMAN BURNED TO DEATH.
BRIGADE DELAYED AT FIRE. Because 6in. of road motal had been rolled over a tire plug, the brigade was delayed several vital minutes in attacking a lire in a cottage in Geelong, Victoria, recently. , Mrs. Mary Neville,. 64 years of age, was burned to death. The outbreak was only 200 yds. from the fire station, and the brigade was promptly on the scene. Failing to locate the nearest plug, the firemen eventually drew water from another plug, 100 yds. away. It was then too late, the flames having got a good hold. The charred body of the woman was found in a little room at the rear. She had made frantic efforts to give the alarm, and was heard by a neighbour to call for help. Another neighbour endeavoured to enter the building, but was driven back by the flames. It was the irony of fate that repairs to the road which obscured the lire hydrant, had been completed only on the day of the fira. . i
