DEATH OF NELSON FAME.

brilliant pacer passes. Nelson Fame, one of the most brilliant pacers in the Dominion over short courses, died early yesterday morning from an internal complaint. For several days previously he had been in a bad way, and, though everything possible was done to save him, the trouble eventually proved fatal. The'loss of Nelson Fame is a severe one 1o his owners. Mrs. C. McGregor and_ R. Auenst. because he was not, only a brilliant racehorse, but would also have had a good stud value when he finished racing. Foaled in 1920, Nelson Fame was by Nelson Bingen from Norice, his sire ar.d dam both being imported from America. At an early nge ho was purchased by Mr. G. Craw and commenced his racing career by running unplaced in a novice event at Hawera. As a three-year-old he showed a lot of brilliance, and, in addition to winning a sprint event, notched several minor placings. Until ho was a five-year-old he carried the colours of ilr. Craw, who then passed him on to Mrs. McGregor and S. August at a substantial figure. During the last couple of seasons Nelson Fame developed brilliancy of a high order and his performances have often been a feature of the meetings at Alexandra Park. In winning the Dunedin Handicap in November ho established a New Zealand record for a milo in saddle by stepping the mile in 2m 9 3-ss. Further proof of his speed v. as also forthcoming when he dead-heated with Jewel Pointer in the Coates Handicap in February, covering the mile and a-quarter in 2m 41s, or at 2m 9s to the mile. On one occasion this season Nelson Fame attempted to lower the Dominion milo record of 2m 3 3-58, but unfortunately he fell in ILe sixth furlong, after going the first half under a minute. Only for the mishap he might have ' succeeded in making new figures. Nelson Fame's winnings amoxmted to £3218.
