COOKS' STRIKE COLLAPSES.
SURRENDER OF THE MEN. OTHER UNIONS' INFLUENCE. TERMS OF THE AGREEMENT. SYDNEY, June 15. The marine cooks' strike has ended, the men, having agreed ta the shipowners' terms. In future the owners are to have an entirely free hand in the selection of men for the galleys, either through the union, at the ship's side or at the shipping offices. Every assistance must be given by union officials in the selection of galley staffs, and, subject to the union giving an undertaking to this effect, the owners will raise no objection to the union keeping lists at its office, showing the dates of unemployment registration, in order to facilitate priority of selection. The owners will be prepared under these terms to re-engage members of the union on the terms of the suspended award. The strike has lasted 15 weeks. In announcing the settlement, the Federal secretary of the Cooks' Union, Mr. J. Tudehope) said the decision had been greatly; influenced by the "extraordinary attitude" of the other unions. He said the cooks were ready for an immediate resumption- of work. The decision to terminate the strike was reached at a mass meeting of cooks held simultaneously with a meeting of the transport group of unions. The secretary of the Trades and Labour Council, J. Garden, announced the cooks' decision, which was received with cheers and groans. Garden immediately telegraphed to Mr. W. Appleton, chairman of the Commonwealth Steamship Owners' Association, saying the men would be ready to report for duly to-day. It is expected that some weeks will elapse before all the vessels return to their normal running.
