TROTTING.

THE AUCKLAND MEETING. FIRST DAY'S ACCEPTANCES. LARGE FIELDS ENGAGED. The Auckland Trotting Club's Winter Meeting, which opens at Alexandra Park on Saturday, has received wide patronage from owners and the splendid list of acceptances received yesterday augurs well for the success of the fixture. Canterbury stables are very strongly represented, and there are representatives from a number of other centres, as well as the usual large quota from local stables. The C. F. Mark Memorial Handicap, the principal event, has attracted an acceptance of 17, and promises to be a thrilling contest. Only two of the horses handicapped have dropped out of this event, and the excellent response from owners is indeed gratifying. The following is the list of acceptances:—

A telegram sent by O. E. Hooper from Barrhill, Canterbury, accepting- with King Pointer for all engagements at the Auckland Trotting Club's meeting, although handed in at Barrhill at one o'clock yesterday afternoon, was not received in Auckland until 8.17 last evening. The acceptances closed at five o clock. The chief postmaster at Auckland advises th? delay was caused through the telegram being mislaid at Barrhill. ______ NOTES BY PICADOR, After racing badly for some time, Parkwood showed some dasli at the recent Canterbury Park meeting by pacing a good race for a mile and a-half. Parkwood tas not been a great success since comme to the Dominion, but his latest effort indicates that lie may be striking form soon. Maid of tbe Mountains has-been a failure since springing a surprise victory in the Newmarket Handicap at the Otahuhu Summer Meeting. She is a capable little pacer once she settles to lier work, but is unreliable at the barrier and rarely goes away correctly. Unless she becomes more solid, she will find it hard to win more races. After a lone spell Signorella made a reappearance at Cambridge last month, but was never prominent. She has improved in condition in the meantime, but may require further racing to return to her best form. Signorella will probably be a competitor at the coming winter meeting. .On several occasions this season Peter Grattan has displayed promise, but he has not done as well as expected in his last ftw starts. Perhaps he may render a better account of himself at the coming meeting, as he is a young horse who might be capable of showing improvement at ony time. Dalmeny hao been ra,cing consistently veil lately and has evidently struck his true form. The black gelding is partial to soft going and will be racing under Hs favourite conditions at the coming meeting. That fact may be worth remembering. Fit and well, Lady Dunmore is a very smart pacer over all distances. She will bo competing with the best at the coming meeting, and, though there i 3 always a doubt about her at the barrier, she is cne of the kind likely to effect a surprise at any time. Still, to get any of the money at the meeting, she will require to be right at her very best. The trotter Golden Gate has been working usefully and bears a very healthy appearance. He will probably be a competitor in the slow-class trotters' events at the coming meeting, but he is getting up in years and may find it hard among his younger rivals. One thing that may be in his favour ia his partiality for soft going. On her form last season Reremai looked like developing into a good mare, but her efforts have fallen short of expectations this season. Once or twice she has shown glimpses of form, but, unless she can improve a good deal upon her latest performances, she is unlikely to fulfil her early promise. The trotter Sebisca is carrying a very bright appearance and looking iii capital order to compete at the coming meeting. It is some tune since Sebisca was on the winning list, but he has displayed some dash m his latest engagement!* and mav have prospects at the coining meeting. although races in hia class will not be easy to win. Gold Dial's exploits this season are pi oof thai she is a solid pacer over a journey and it is on the cards that she will race well m her engagements at the coming meeting. Her successes this term include the Northland Trotting Cup and the To Aroha Trotting Cup. Consistency has been a feature of the latest efforts of Nelson Tasker, whoso last four starts have yielded two seconds and a third. Formerly he was regarded merely as a sprinter, but by pacing several soiia races over two miles he, Ims demonstrated that his stamina has improved considerably. Nelson Tasker is reported to be in prreafc heart to undertake his this month and it is likely he will u«ain perform creditably. The event in which the two-year-o'd trotters Koro Peter and First Wrack will be mitched cxn the second day of.the Auckland Trot liii- Club's Winter Meeting will have the title of the Two-Year-Old Trotting Challenge Stakes. Though there will only be the two competitors, the contest will be treated as an ordinary race, with the totalisator open for speculation.
