BELIEF WORKERS' PAY.
PROTEST IN CANTERBURY. NO ALTERATION INTENDED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. In reply to a letter of protest from the Canterbury General Labourers' Union against the Government's decision to continue the present rates of pay to relief workers, the Prime Minister stated that the question had been given full consideration and ho regretted that the Government could not see its way to make any alteration. "Opportunity is given, however," Mr. Coates added, "for men to earn more by working in co-operative parties on a cooperative basis, and I shall be pleased to refer this aspect to the Minister of Public Works with a view t-o ascertaining whether the men in the Canterbury district are being given such opportunity."
