DROWNED IN LAKE.

MAORI'S PURSUIT OF HORSE. RESCUE EFFORTS FRUITLESS. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. J HUNTLY, Wednesday. An inquest concerning the death of the Maori named Kaeho, who was drowned in Lake Whangape on May 27, was held at Rangiriri to-day before Mr. E. A. Jones, acting-coroner. Evidence was given by Tommy Teahu Poteni and Jerry Ngakete to the effect that deceased, accompanied by the two others, went in search of a young unbroken horse, which was running on the shores of the lake. The horse rushed into the lake and commenced to swim away from the shore. Deceased stripped himself of clothing and set off after it on another horse. When he came abreast of the animal he jumped from the back of his own horse to that of the unbroken colt, which immediately became fractious. After riding it for about five chains, the colt sank, and deceased commenced to swim for the shore, a distanco of about 10 chains. In the meantime Teahu, on another horse, set out to 'assist Kaeho, but after going about a chain liis horse refused duty and returned to the shore. Kaeho then sank. No boats were available. A verdict was returned that deceased met his death by accidental drowning.
