WATER FOR TITAKAU.
APPROVAL OF SCHEME. [by telegraph.—own correspondent. ] TTTAKAU, Friday. The proposal to provide a water supply for Tuakau was explained by members of' the Town Board at a public meeting of ratepayers in the Tuakau Hall this evening. The speakers were Messrs. W. J. Taylor, chairman of the board, G. Arrowsmith and J. Fulton, members. A report from an engineer stated the only suitable source was a spring on Mr. A. Smeed's property, about three miles from Tuakau. To provide a reservoir and bring water into the town by a 4in. main and then reticulate the town would cost £8750. This would involve a rate of 1 l-10d in the pound, but it was proposed to collect the interest and sinking fund by charging for water supplied. The charge in the case of a property valued at £6OO (improved valuo) would be £2 2s a vear. with an increase of approximately 7s*for every additional £IOO in valuation. Farmers in the town district would have to pay only on the value of their house with half an acre, and not on the value of their whole farms. Sufficient pressure would be available for fire-fighting in the ?nain street. The meeting, by 24 votes to 8, expressed approval of tlio proposal, and asked the board to take a poll of the ratepayers.
