ANZAC DAY.
Sir, —Under tHe assumption that I have advocated holding Anzac celebrations ou a Sunday, your correspondent " Eighthour Day" says, inter alia, "On Mr. O'Leary's reasoning, I would suggest that Labour Day be held on a Sunday." Even if I did so suggest, it would not logically follow I should support his proposition. M. P. O'Leary, Secretary, Auckland Electrical Workers' Union.
Si r> —\\ 7 hen Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day, Anniversary Day, or any other celebration, falls on a Sunday, an extra day's holiday is claimed. We hear nothing of lost pay then. Why is Anzac Day the exception ? Anzac Day, Apr:l 25, is kept holy, a day of quiet thought and remembrance. Change it, and it will at once deteriorate into a holiday, not a holy day. Let us keep it holy. Lest We Forget.
Sir,—Mr. M. P. O'Leary's cheap sneer in Wednesday's issue, in which he says, " and after all, Anzac Day is primarily a celebration of the achievement of s youth/ M is now followed by another insult to the people of New Zealand in his letter appearing on Saturday. In this letter he says, " I have not the slightest objection tc Anzac Day or for further holidays to celebrate past victories or defeats." Let mo tell Mr. 0 Leary that all Britishers can accept defeat, but we will not stand having it " rubbed in by a man working in our midst. Steadfast.
