THEFT OF SCRAP METAL.
ENGINEER SENT TO PRISON. SENTENCE OF FOUR MONTHS. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, Monday. A charge of stealing scrap lead and copper, valued at £44 10s lid, the property of tho Post and Telegraph Department, was v preferred against Henry Deveraux, aged 31, engineer, who appeared in the Magistrate's Court to-day. The magistrate said he had given the case full consideration and had come to the conclusion that it was not one in which the benefit of probation could be extended. Accused was sentenced to four months' imprisonment. The case was heard last week and the thefts extended over a period of a year. Counsel said Deveraux had looked on scrap metal in tho light of a perquisite, so ho sought leniency for his client.
