CANADA AND AUSTRALIA. FIGURES FOR LAST YEAR. Australian and N.Z. Press Association. OTTAWA, April 26. Givjng evidence before the Immigration Committee of the Synod, Canon W. Burd, of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, said ho favoured the quota system for foreigners, at 50 per cent, of the previous year's total. British immigrants found Australia not so attractive as Canada, as assisted passages cost four times as much. Settlement schemes between 1922-27 brought 74,000 persons to Canada and 176,000 to Australia. The Minister- of Immigration, Mr. R. Forke, in reply, said assisted passages last year took 36,000 persons to Australia and 39,000 to Canada.
