VALUE OF HERD-TESTING.
ADDRESS AT COROMANDEL. MEETING OF LOCAL GROUP. [BV TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] COROMANDEL, Thursday. A meeting of the Coromandel Group of the New Zealand Co-operative Herdtesting Association was presided over by Mr. Georgfe Darling. The meeting was convened to confer with Mr. C. M. Hume, general manager of the association. Mr. Hume gave a review of the history of the association, and said that during jts first year 31,000 cows were tested, while for the present year 76,700 had beeu tested. For the season nearing its end, it was thought the average product per cow would bo about 2301b. of butter-fat. The Subsidy Allocation Board, which allotted the respective shares of the Government subsidy of £BOOO, on a basis of the number of cows tested by the different groups, has been urged to secure a continuance of the subsidy for at least two more years. The association this year expected to collect the subsidy on 66,000 cows. The Dominion Federation of the Association would meet at Hamilton in July, and the speaker strongly recommended the local 'branch to send a representative. The splendid results already achieved in calf-marking, both to the breeder and the milking industry, were elaborated by Mr. Hume. He urged suppliers to get rid of their scrub calves and replenish their herds with marked calves. Culling and testing, he said, were the sheet-anchors of the dairy industry.
