YOUTHS AND MOTOR-CAR.
CHARGE OF CONVERSION. DANGER OF HIRE SYSTEM. A charge of unlawfully converting a motor-car to their use was preferred against two youths, aged 18 and 19 respectively, before Mr. W. K. McKean, S.M., in tho Police Court yesterday. Their names were ordered to be suppressed. In asking for a remand, Chief-Detec-tive Hammond said the two youths hired tho car for a day from White Taxis, Limited. They failed to appear at the end of tho day, and were subsequently arrested at Thames, where they had driven. They were brought to Auckland on Thursday, and the car had to be driven back, the total expenses incurred amounting to £l7. "Persons who rent cars have precarious business to a certain extent, Mr. Hammond said, "and they have to run the risk of people getting away with the cars. Still, I suppose, they are entitled to the same protection as others." Accused were remanded until this morning, bail being fixed at £25.
