RUSE TO STEAL RING.

GEM WORTH! £750 TAKEN.

MAN DASHES OUT OF SHOP.

ARREST IN HOTEL FOLLOWS.

[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ]

WELLINGTON, Tuesday,

A man walked into the shop of Messrs. Partridge and Jenness, jewellers, Manners Street, this afternoon, and, representing himself to be a well-known racehorse owner, asked to see a diamond ring valued at £750, which was being displayed in the window. He was served by Mr. F. Jenness. Taking the ring, the man moved toward the door, apparently to seo the ring in a better light. Then, without any warning, he dashed from the shop. Mr. Jenness ran round the counter, which is a, fairly long one, and out to the door, where ho was informed that a man who had just left the shop had gone into the Alhambra Hotel.

A thorough search of the hotel failed to reveal any trace of the missing man. Mr. Jenness sought the aid of Detective Jarrold and they started to search for the man. After visiting the bars of the Central Hotel and Barrett's Hotel, they located the fugitive displaying the ring in the bar of the Grand Hotel.

Seeing that he was being watched the man immediately put the ring away. When he was accosted by the detective he promptly fainted, or pretended to faint. This gave the detective an excellent opportunity of searching him for the ring, which was soon recovered. The alleged thief was arrested and will be brought before tlio Court to-morrow.
