TENNIS TOURNAMENTS.

NORTH ISLAND CONTESTS. SINGLES TITLE TO WRIGHT. PLAY DELAYED BY HEAVY RAIN. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.) TE AROHA, Tuesday. Heavy rain, which set in at one o'clock to-day. delayed the completion of the North Island lawn tennis championship and ban dicap tourney for three hours. The singles championship final was won by Wright (Te Aroha), who defeated Brough (Hamilton) in three straight sets, the last two of which were played in semi-darkness on a slippery court. In the ladies' championship doubles Misses Knight (Auckland) and Clouston (Hamilton) were leading Misses Beverly and Beverly (Matamata) 4 3 in the second set. after winning the first at 6—4, when the game was abandoned owing to darkness. The match will be completed with other games on Saturday week. There were several surprises to-day, one being the defeat of Morrison (Auckland) by Cox (Hinuera) in the fourth round of the championship singles. Morrison won the first set easily and after slackening in the second set could not overcome the perseverance of his opponent. Cos ran Wright to three sets in the semi-final, in which the former was beaten by superior courtcraft. The final between Wright and Brough was played in a failing light and on a slippery court, in the first set Wright led to 4—l. but then lapsed into errors. He finally won, 7—5. The second set was another base-line duel, in which Wright used a cross-court, backhand drive effectively. Brough pushed him hard, but lost 4—G. The third set was won comfortably by the Te Aroha player at o—2. Wright also won the handicap singles. At the conclusion of to-day's play Mr. C. E. Mucmillan, M.P., presented the singles championship trophy to Wright, whom he congratulated on behalf of the club. Mr. McMillan also spoke appreciatively of the services of the president. Except for a lew finals the Whangarei Tennis Club's Easter tourney was brought to a, conclusion to-day. The chief feature of the tourney has been outstanding performance oi J. Charters, a young player, who has produced consistently good form and who has both the men's eingleß championship and the A grade handicap singles to his credit. He is in the running for several other events. Charters' record is all the more remarkable when it is remembered that he is able to leave his farm for only a half-day a week for practice during the season.
