TENNIS TOURNAMENTS.

NORTH ISLAND CONTESTS. ■ THE FIXTURE AT TE AROHA. GOOD PROGRESS MADE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TE AROHA, Monday. The North Island lawn tennis championship and handicap tourney was continued to-day in dull, calm weather. A shower tf rain at 1 p.m. delayed games for forty minutes. The handicap games occupied the major part of the day', and should be completed by noon to-morrow. It is hoped to play the championship finals at 4 p.m. tomorrow. In the singles, Morrison (Auckland) is a favourite for the title, but locul enthusiasts favour the chances of Wright, the young Te Aroha player. It would not be surprising, however, to see H. D. Thomson contesting the final. Morrison and Johns have excellent prospects in the doubles and miy find McCracken and Thomas or Chalmers and Lamb the hardest to beat. Miss Knight has not been extended in the ladies' singles, and should win the event. In the doubles she and Miss Clouston are combining well. The Misses Beverly (Matamata), however, have defeated all opponents so far in convincing fashion. Tho committee adopted a firm attitude with late comers this morning and all wore scratched. This caused disappointment, and not a little heartburning among country players, but the committee, in its desire to run the games to time, could not afford to take liberties with the schedule. The tennis on the whole is below championship standard. This is due to the absence of a number of leading players.
