RAILWAY OFFICERS.

CONFERENCE IN MELBOURNE.

A NEW ZEALAND CHAIRMAN.

For th 3 first time in its history the Australian and New Zealand General Railway Officers' Conference, recently concluded in Melbourne, was presided over by a New Zealand delegate. This honour was done Mr. G. S. Lynda, chief mechanical engineer of the New Zealand railways, the only representative of the Dominion present. Mr. Lvnde, who, with Mrs. Lynde, returned to Auckland by the Aorangi yesterday, stated that the agenda paper was the longest yet discussed at these conferences, and contained many important and interesting subjects. In Mr. Lynda's opinion these conferences cannot but result in good for the railway systems of Australia and New Zealand and therefore for the communities they serve. During his brief stay in Australia he was able to visit the New South Wales Government railway workshops, the Victorian and the South Australian railway workshops, and he also had an opportunity of looking over coal-handling appliances, the new "Pacific" and "Mountain" types of locomotives and new observation and dining cars. He was greatly impressed by all he saw. In Sydney he enjoyed special facilities for seeing the new underground railway and the largest bridge undertaking the world has ever seen, the harbour bridge. Mr. and Mrs. Lynde will continue their journey to Wellington this evening.
