MERCURY BAY REGATTA.
POPULARITY op FIXTURE. MANY VISITING COMPETITORS. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WHITIANGA, Saturday. Tho Mercury Bay regatta was held to-day in beautiful weather. There was a patchy south-west breeze. A large number of boats from Auckland, Tauranga and Thames competed. Results were: — First-class Yacht Race.—Queenie, 1; Janet, 2; Wairiki. 3. The Yankee, of Tauranga, had tho race well in Hand when, she grounded. . 1 ■ - Tauranga Launch Race (Mr, R. .White s trophy).—Venus. 1-, Valencia, S: Severn, 3. Second-Class Sailing' Boilts.—Leorie. 1; Speedwell, 2; Blue Comet, 3, The local • boats were outclassed by the visitors. Schoolboys' Yacht Dinghy Race.--R. Chadban. 1: R. Bennett. 2; G. Brunton. 3. Allcomers' Handicap Launch Race.— Waiata, 1; Valencia, 2; Venus, 3; j Men's Pair-oar Race.—B. Wood head and H. Harsarit, 1; I. Ibbetsfcu and mate,. 2: L. iN'icholson and Hpdge, 3. , . , The horse-swimraine race across the harbour, from the ferry landing, proved most exciting and resulted:—l). Lee. 1; Smith, 2; Motor Race, for .Hamilton's Cup D Hamilton's Nancy, 1; E. R. Lyons Spray. 2; H. Robinson's Swan. 3. Firpt-class Launch Race, (over 7 knots).— Defender.- I:•'P»lk>'-Mine. one second separated first and second. One of the best races of the day was that of the sculling < race for >E. Bell's cup, for boys under 17. The result was:—J. R. Chadban, 1: R. Berinett, 2; J. Davis, 3. . There-was fa large attendance of visitors, many coming "bv car from' Tauranga a»d many parts of the Waikoto and Auckland. The function: should result in considerable addition to th* funds of the local hospital, which is maintained by voluntary effort.
