ffHE AUCKLAND MEETING. (EASTER HANDICAP SURPRISE. VICTORY FOR IN THE SHADE. EPISODE'S CHAMPAGNE STAKES.
The Auckland Racing Club's Autumn Meeting inaugurated on Saturday Biidcr ideal weather conditions, and the marked popularity of Ellerslie was once aplu pointedly demonstrated. There rvas an attendance of 23,000, which Included many visitors from other leading centres ot the Dominion. The Hon. K. Williams, Minister of Public Works, vas among the visitors present. From first to last the proceedings were characterised with that fine sporting spirit in keeping with an Ellerslie gathering. The management of the meeting left nothing to be desired, and, in this connection the arrangements made by the secretary, Mr. W. S. Spence, as usual played an important part. Strong fields were the order of the day, and the racing witnessed w:is of a most interesting character. A feature of the day's sponb was a treble Success registered by horses -carrying the colours of the Wanganui sportsman, Mr. G. M. Currie, Mask (President's Handicap), Damaris (Great Northern Oaks) and Episode (Great Northern Champagne Stakes) being the horses involved; and White Wings, who won the Onslow Stakes tinder Mr. W. Scholium's colours, was also bred at Mr. Currie's Wanganui estate. The four winners named are all descendants of the imported sire Limond, owned by Mr. Currie.
The Easter Handicap Contest. "When the numbers went up denoting th» composition of the field for the Easter .Handicap, it was found that the field for the mile race had been reduced to fourteen by the withdrawal of Star Stranger, Money Order Dorce, Le Choucas, True Blood, Tinokoa and Oration. From the outset of speculation, Joy King, Bright G'ow, and Awarere always stood out as the favourite division. Of the favourite division, Awarere was the one to give his followers, the strongest run, and when the son of Swift Flight, who had been making the pace, dashed round the home turn in advance, his prospects looked very bright. Awarere combated all challenges up to inside the half distance, where In tho Shade, who finished witb a remarkable run, dashed up amid a scene of intense excitement, and, cutting down Aware.® thirty .yards from the wincing post, ho scored a half-length victory. There was only one horse in the field backed for less money than In the Shade, and the victory of the Papakura-trained gelding can be voted one of the most •complete surprises connected with the Easter Handicap. In the Shade, however, well deserved his victory, for he was at the tail of the field in the early stages of the contest, and when the head of the straight was reached he was not included in the first eight at that point of the contest. The brilliant run he put in can therefore be wall imagined, for the pace was right on In the Shade is an Australian-bred geldiiig by the imported sire Australian Sun. When a yearling he was purchased in Sydney by Mr. J. T. Jamieson, who subsequently sold him to Mr. W. S. Glenn, M.P, and it was under the latter's colours that the brown gelding registered his sensational surprise in the Easter Handicap on Saturday. The totaJisator investments amounted to £86,756 10s. Compared with the sum handled on the corresponding day last, year this r presents an increase of £4768; but it has to be stated that this year's "programme comprised eight events against seven hst year.

NOTES ON THE RACING. SOME SPLENDID CONTESTS. BY ARCHER. Thirteen started in the Presidents Handicap, Satrap being a hot favourite, over twice as well backed as the second choice, Mandane. The eventual winner, Mask, was only fourth in demand at a nioe price. Le Chcucas was soon in front from a good start, followed by Papatu, Mask. Hipo, Town Bank and Queen Arch. Along the back Corinax joined the leaders, while Transformer and Satrap ran up fairly handy. Corinax was in front at the cutting, where Papatu, Queen Arch, Le Choucas, Mask, Satrap and Town Bank were following in fairly close order. Rounding the homo turn Corinax and Papatu were almost on terms in front, witb Queen Arch, Le Choucas, Mask. Satrap and Town Bank handy. Inside the distance Papatu looked like seeing it out, but Mask finished in great 6tyle and beat him by half a length. Town Bank was a neck away third, and Mandane running on in fourth position. Then in order were Satrap, Hipo, Queen Arch and Princess Ronnie. Mask is back to hie best. Papatu and Town Bank are coming on quickly, and may soon do better. Mandane aud Princess Ronnie were in the rear in the middle stages, and closed up at the finish. Satrap ran a decent race, but was not quite good enough.
Damaris Easily. There were six runners in the Great Northern Oaks, and tho winner Damaris was a good favourite, with Auriculus, who acted as runner-up. tho outsider of tho field. Ti Tree took charge quickly, and passing the stand was out four lengths from Auriculus and Miss Mcrcia, with Damaris another couple of lengths back, and then Doree. Da,maris moved up second alorig the back, otherwise the order was unchanged. With a mile covered Damaris went to the front, to lead into the straight just clear of Auriculus and Ti Tree, who were followed by Wild Pigeon and Doree. Damaris went on in the straight to win easily by two and a-hulf lengths from Auriculus, who beat Ti Tree by a head. Wild Pigeon was a moderate fourth, with Doree and Miss Mernia well beaten. Damaris showed undoubted imperiority The following sectional times 'vere supplied by the official timekeejjer, liir, J. K. Douglas:—3 furlongs, 40s; 4 furlongs, 62 2-ss; "5 furlongs, lm 7 2-ss; 6 furlongs, lm 20 3-ss; 1 mile, lm 475; 11 miles, 2m 36 3-ss. The last half-mile was run in 49 3-Ss,
For the Brighton Hurdles Wedding March was nearly £SOO better backed than Archibald, who had a good call over the third choice, Lady Spalpeen. Mia Bella, Kawa and Archibald were quickest to the first fence, Kawa and Archibald going on in front from Potoanui and Lady Cintra. Potoanui assumed command at tho fourth, to lead past the stand from Archibald, Lady Spalpeen, Kawa, Lady Cintra and Revel, with Wedding March last. Lady Cintra lost hec position along tlio back.
where Lady Spalpeen ran np to Potomui. Archibald struck hard at the fence by the six furlong post, and nearly lost his rider. Then Potoanui drew out again, and at the half-mile post he was several lengths clear of Lady Spalpeen, with Archibald, Kawa. Revel (who got interfered with at this stage), and Wedding March all handy. A little further on Archibald dropped back and Potoanui showed the way into the straight just clear of Lady fspalpeen, Kawa, Wedding March and Revel. Wedding March caught the leader soon after crossing the last fence and came on to win by a length from Revel, who defeated Potoanui by a neck. Lady Spalpeen was several lengths away fourth, with Kawa, King Amans, Karamu and Mia Bella following at intervals. Wedding March registered a nice performance, and was very capably handled by W. Rennie. Revel was slightly unlucky, and Potoanui went a fino race. A Great Race. The Easter Handicap was productive of a great race and a big surprice, an outsider in In the Shade getting home narrowly in a spectacular finish. The wagering on the event was very spirited, Joy King being a slightly better favourite than Bright Glow, who was about A'IOOO more fancied than Awarere. The outside horse. Laughing Prince, moved first from a fine start, only to lose his position quickly. Before a furlong was covered Ballymoy 11. and Awarere were in command from Paganelli, Nancy Lee, Great Charter, Bright Glow, Lysander, Day Guard and Flying Juliet, In the Shade being last. Awarere drew out slightly at the end of a couple of furlongs and showed the way through *'ao cutting to Ballymoy 11., Paganelli, Bright Glow, Lysander, Valkon, Great Charter, Day Guard and Nany Lee, with Flying Juliet, Joy King and In the Shade still in the rear. Entering the straight Awarere just led Ballymoy 11., Paganelli, Bright Glow, Valkon, Great Charter, Lysander, and Laughing Prince being next. Inside the distance Awarere led Great Charter by a length, while In the Shade, Nancy Lee, Bright Glow, Joy King, Laughing Prince and Valkon were almost in line across the course. In the Shade, finishing gallantly, gradually overhauled the leaders and got up to win by half a length from Awarere. Great Charter was a similar distance away third, and Nancy Lee fourth. Then in close order were Joy King, Valkon. Bright Glow, Lysander and Flying Juliet, who was followed by Paganelli, Ballymoy 11. and Laughing Prince. In the Shade, who was favoured with a run near the rails, made a wonderful effort over the last three furlongs. Awarere made the pace hot in the early stages and just failed to stall off the winner. Great Charter was always prominent, and Nancy Lee finished on after losing a good position early. Joy King was badly placed most of the way, and Valkon was forced to cover a lot of ground. Paganelli failed to run on, and the early pace troubled Laughing Prince. Bright Glow had every chance, but was not good enough. The following sectional times were supplied by Mr. J. K. Douglas:—l furlong, 13s; two furlongs, 21s; three furlongs, 3555; four furlongs. 47 2-ss; the mile, lm 38 l-ss. The Great Northern Champagne Stakes attracted a field of nine. IJaasay was a good favourite, and there was also heavy support for Episode and Prince Humphrey. The inside horses Episode and Freehold found their feet quickest, and once they settled down had Avon Court, Mithra, Prince Humphrey and Itaasay, who were in close order, as their nearest attendants. The positions were much the same as they rounded tho homo turn, although Avon Court was losing ground. Inside the distance Prince Humphrey issued a strong challenge and momentarily looked like getting up. Then Episode wont away again, to win by a length and three-quarters from Prince Humphrey, with Freehoid threequarters of a length away third. Mithra was close up fourth, succeeded by Raasay, Prodice and Avon Court. Episode showed fine speed, and is undoubtedly a good filly. Prince Humphrey made a game bid for victory, but Raasay disappointed. The latter was on the extreme outside at tho barrier, and that was against him, as he was on the outside all tho way. Staghunter ran badly.
Wiltshire Scores. For tho Mangers Steeplechase Princo Eufua was a slightly belter favourite than "Wiltshire, who had a slight call over Memsahib. Clockwork had a short turn in tho lead and then Memsahib and Mashoor went out to make the pace. Wiltshire ran to the front before reaching the double, where ho was followed by Mashoor. Memsahib, Prince Rufus and Uralla. Mashoor drifted out quickly along tho back and Memsahib dropped back going up the hill, leaving Wiltshire several lengths out from Prince Rufus and Uralla, with Sea Comet closing up. Wiltshire was always travelling well in the final stages, and he won very comfortably by five lengths from Uralla, who beat Prince Rufus by a similar margin. Sea Comet was some lengths away fourth, followed at intervals by Simplicilas, Garzon and Memsahib. Wiltshire chanced a few fences, otherwise his performance was very pleasing. Uralla made a fine showing for a first attempt over country. All started in the Onslow Stakes. Perception was a firm favourite, about £BOO better supported than Gesto, who was a good deal better fancied than the third choice. White Wings. Winnington and White -Wings moved first, but were soon supplanted by Bulolo, who led through the cutting a couple of lengths clear of Te Atiawa, Lucy Rose, White Wings and Jolly Money. Bulolo was still in front at the homo turn from Lucy Rose, Te Atiawa, White Wings, Jolly Money, Gesto and Perception. White Wings came through inside the distance and scored nicely by a length from Lucy Rose. Gesto was three-parts of a length away third, with To Atiawa fourth. Then followed Perception, Jolly Money and Bulolo. Perception did not begin smartly enough from his outside position to havo a chance, and Gesto was also a bit unlucky. White Wings haß improved, and so, too, has Lucy Rose, Bulolo and Jolly Money went creditable races, tho former showing a lot of speed. The Eden Handicap was a. betting race, and the popular fancies. Micrometer, Cynthia N. and Liaison were all at fair prices. Ohinemuri took charge quickly from Cynthia N., Welcome Home, Dimmer, Liaison and Winsome Boy. Before half the journey was covered Ohinemuri had a good break, and sho led into the straight eight lengths clear of Cynthia N. and Winsome Boy, who were followed by Dimmer and Liaison. Nothing had a chance with Ohinemuri at the finish, and sho had a margin of eight lengths at tho post from Winsome Boy, who beat Cynthia N. by a neck. Micrometer finished on in fourth position in front of Dimmer, Cybele, Liaison and Restaurant. SECOND DAY'S EVENTS. GOOD FIELDS ENGAGED. Tho'* Auckland Autumn Meeting will be concluded at Ellerslie to-day. Tho various events havo attracted good fields, and some more interesting contests should be provided. REVIEW/ OF THE FIELDS. BY ARCHER. A big field of hacks will contest tie Nelson Handicap, and fancies may take a fairly wide range. Backers will probably follow form and give most support to Cynthia N., Winsome Boy and Liaison. Some speedy youngsters figure in the Victoria Handicap. The Raasay-Gesto bracket is likely to appeal to backers, who may also support Mithra and White Wings. There is a very useful field in the Trial Hurdles, a<nd it looks like being a very interesting raco. Potoanui and Lady Spalpeen ran good races in a better class on the opening day, and may dispute favouritism. Uralla is also likely to claim attention. Ten figure on the card for tho Autumn Handicap, and there is material for a spleaidid contest. Star Stranger is in great order and, despite his big weight, may share the publio confidence, with Mundane and Papalu, a pair that raced well on Saturday. Runners will not be numerous in the Autumn Steeplechase, but there is a nice field just the same. It is likely to bo a good betting race, and tho public may show a preference for Wiltshire. Wedding March and Glendowie.
There will not bo many starters in the Great Northern St. Leger, which seems likely to provide an interesting match between Satrap and Laughing Pi'iaico. Satrap may start favourite. Some speedy sprinters will contest the Huia Hardicap, and the event bears a very open aspect. Nancy Leo, Paganelli and Money Order are very fit horses, and they may ehure the public confidence. The Isiiaigtcn Handicap has drawn a nice field, and Bliould be a great betting race. Valkon, Flying Juliet and Ballymoy 11. read nicely placed, and should be among the best backed.
