WAIHOU RIVER LEVEL.
RISE OF' SEVERAL INCHES. REPORTS BY TIRAU FARMERS. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] MATAMATA. Thursday. Confirmation of the reports that the Waihou River has risen in its level since the damming of the Waikaio River at Arapuni is given by Tirau farmers. ■ Tirau is above Okoroire, where a new bridge is being built. A well-known Tirau farmer, of 20 years' residence in the district, through whose property the Waihou River flows, states that the level of the river is from Sin. to 9in. higher than he had ever seen it, with the exception of one occasion when a temporary rise was caused by a cloudburst. He states that a certain rock, upon which he used to kneel to get water, is now covered with Bin. or 9in. of water. Another reputable farmer who has a waterwheel in the Waihou states that the level has risen Bin. or 9in. All the information to hand so far is to the effect that the level has risen since the dam was closed at Arapuni."
