STOCKS AND SHARES.

AUCKLAND STOCK EXCHANGE TURNOVER NOT LARGE. Although quotations came with unusual freedom in many classes of stock on the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday the amount of business actually handled was not large. Government securities continue to be in keen demand and Inscribed Stock, 1938. 4£ per cent., sold at £97 12s 6d in the morning, and at £97 15s in the afternoon. Last week the price, was £97 10s, and the first transaction of the year in January was at £96 17s 6d. War Loans, 1938 and 1939, per cent., were sought at £97 12s 6d, no sellers quoting. Both Hamilton and Ngaruawahia 6 per cent, debentures were available at £lO5, buyers £IOO.

Keen interest was shown in banking shares, but without sales being effected, Queensland National Bank shares were offered at £9 7s 6d, buyers £9. Buyers of English, Scottish and Australian advanced to £8 Is, , sellers £8 2s 6d. New South Wales were available at £47 12s 6d, but buyers were firm at £47 10s. Insurance quotations were practically unchanged.

In coal Renown Collieries, contributing, changed hands at. the current price of 13s. In gas, holders of Aucklands fell to 22s at tho late call, buyers 21s 6d. In miscellaneous, Sanfords sold at 19s 6d, as compared with" 19s 3d at the beginning of. tho month.
