QUINNAT SALMON.
CATCHES IN CANTERBURY.
RUN IN THE RANGITATA.
The run of quinnat salmon at the Rangitata River in Canterbury continues, and anglers are securing some good catches. The fish are being caught at the mouth of the river, and at different spots up the river between 20 and 30 miles from the mouth.
A Tim am angler who had the good fortune to land, a 251b. quinnat at the Rangitata river one day last week, had the illfortune to lose it again after it was dead. He was cleaning the fish at the edge of of the river when it slipped out of his hands and into deep water, where it sank. The owner of the fish had been warned a moment before that this was liable to happen, and he was advised to attach a string to the fish, but he declined to take the advice, stating that he had cleanen plenty before at the river's edge and had "never lost one yet." Ten quinnat. the largest, weighing 231b., and the smallest 161b., was the "basket" which Messrs, D. Cosgrove and G. Rush took into Timarn last Wednesday from the Rangitata. The fish were all fresh run, and in prime condition. The aggregate weight of the ten was 1661b.
